The Comfort of Touch

The Comfort of Touch’s Karen Burns

Text Box: I have been care giving from the age of 12 when I first started working at a nursing home transporting and serving meals to the residents. At 16 I became a nurses aide. I drove the nurses crazy because when I got to work I untied all the residents and took them for a singing walk up and down the ward, it drove me crazy to see them tied up. I always gave them hugs and got so much enjoyment out of getting them to smile or giggle.

At 17 I studied at Quincy City Hospital for 3 years and received my RN and Associates Degree in Science. My first experience, as an RN was head nurse on a Geriatric Psychiatric ward in Portland City Hospital. When I moved to Massachusetts and served on an Oncology floor at Brockton Hospital. My favorite shift was second shift where I did the teaching and gave back massages to the patients to help them relax and sleep.

In 1985 I ruptured a disc and put my nursing career on hold. While I recovered from the rupture I did bookkeeping for my husband business. Funny, I then started working for a bookkeeping service that was run by a previous social worker and I ended up with several jobs with elderly couples, with Alzheimer’s disease, CVA, cancer, and/or diabetes, and they needed 1 hour of bookkeeping and 3 hours of company. It was so rewarding. I still have those clients and have promised them all that I will always be there for them.

What a wonderful experience I’ve had. I so look forward to continuing this adventure with the knowledge of how to bring even more comfort from my abilities as a Massage Therapist, Dowser and Reiki Healer.

A 1996 study indicates that a 10-15 minute chair massage results in decreased job stress, increased alertness and increased speed and accuracy on math computations. Office workers receiving regular massages were more alert, preformed better and were less stressed than those who where not receiving massages.

In my experience I have found that many older clients have been very surprised and prefer the chair massage. It’s lack of oils used, the fact that you remain fully clothed and the issues that can be addressed have been very comforting to them.

I encourage regular massage for everyone. In this fast paced world it is good to stop for a few minutes and receive THE COMFORT OF TOUCH.
